AI, connected handheld devices, advanced exoskeletons and collaborative robotics: Liftop takes stock of the various trends underway in the materials handling sector

On the eve of the new year, Liftop has published a review of trends in the materials handling sector on its website. With a rather optimistic message: ‘ In 2025, emerging trends will offer solutions to prevent injury, make handling more intuitive, and lay the foundations for a more sustainable and humane future ’.

In detail, Liftop identifies six emerging trends:

  • Artificial intelligence and machine learning – Liftop believes that AI will play a central role in optimising processes and improving working conditions. In particular, Liftop lists the main key applications expected from the development of AI in the field of materials handling: movement analysis and personalised support, process optimisation, risk prediction and voice or gesture commands.
  • Connected wearable devices – ‘ By 2025, connected tools and intelligent software (where we find AI) will play a key role in optimising workstation ergonomics,’ predicts Liftop, citing wearable sensors, augmented reality glasses and predictive maintenance as examples.
  • Advanced exoskeletons – ‘ These structures, worn by operators to assist them in their movements, continue to gain ground. Their rapid development promises even lighter, more efficient models tailored to different needs ’, says Liftop.
  • Collaborative robotics – Assisted lifting, parcel sorting or order picking: cobots (collaborative robots) are redesigning handling (reduced physical effort, greater flexibility, improved safety).
  • Innovative materials – ‘ By 2025, manufacturers will be focusing more on eco-design, reducing the carbon footprint of equipment and favouring recyclable materials ’, says Liftop.
  • Holistic approaches to ergonomics – ‘ To go beyond equipment, the future of handling ergonomics lies in a global approach, integrating all aspects of the logistics flow and operator well-being ’, says Liftop, which is promoting the deployment of integrated solutions for optimising workspaces and managing logistics flows.
