Bioplastics: development in sight
European Bioplastics has published a report that tends to confirm the continued growth of global bioplastics production capacity
Global bioplastics production capacity is set to rise from 2.47 million tonnes in 2024 to around 5.73 million tonnes in 2029: this is the figure to be taken from the report presented on 10 December by the European Bioplastics organisation, which brings together a large number of manufacturers and research centres in the sector.
It’s true that the market is particularly buoyant. ‘ The growth in bioplastics production capacity must be seen in the context of growing consumer awareness of the environmental impact associated with global plastic consumption, underlining not only the resilience but also the importance of our industry in contributing to sustainable solutions ,’ explains Hasso von Pogrell, Director General of European Bioplastics (EUBP), who also points out that bioplastics are now being used for a growing variety of applications, from packaging and fibres to consumer goods, automotive and agricultural products.
However, the report points out that packaging remains the main outlet for bioplastics, with a market share of almost 45%.
